This model of an early World war II example of the Beetle, was known as the Volkswagon Type 230 Gas Generator. It was one of several Beetles and Kubelwagons that were fitted with wood gas generators mounted in the front of the vehicles.
This kit is a CMK 1/35th scale model which is an injection plastic kit with cast resin and etched nickel steel parts to convert the standard Beetle into the gas generator version. You need to cut out part of the boot floor to fit the lower section of the generator in it. This is the only bit of plastic surgery that needs to be done on the model, the rest of the resin parts just get glued in place on top of the boot lid and on the underside of the floor. I did have to rebuild one of the resin parts, as it had created a curve to itself after casting. This was sorted out by cutting away the curved areas of resin and replaced them with some plastic sprue of the same diameter. Apart from the surgery and rebuilding of the curve resin part, construction of the model was straight forward.
I painted the model in gloss black and opted to fit the plain steel wheels to the model. Chrome hubcaps came with the kit, but I did not think they would suit the model. To finish the model off, there was some etched turn indicator arms to be assembled and fitted. The was also a roof rack with spare wheel holder to be assembled too. If they were etched in brass, the roof rack would have been not trouble to make . I could have got the soldering iron out and soldered it together. But with it being in steel, it was too springy and kept returning to a flat state. I could also not get enough heat into the metal to solder all the parts together too. So I gave up on the thing and left the rack off the model. The model was finished off with some weathering.
